What's Up with Thingy?

I was talking to TJ (lightningcount) before and I happened to refer to something as a "thingy". TJ then said that the word thingy seems to be a common word among blind people, which I'd never realized or noticed before. Could it be a weird blindy thingy? Do you find yourself constantly referring to something as "the pluggy thingy", "the little plastic thingy", or "that big complicated technical thingy"? Come on, divulge your thingy obsession.

Well, I've met people who do this, and have to say with some thought that it's been predominantly women who say it. I don't myself as far as I know, and don't know if it's a blindism.

I know sighted people use it as well. I think people use thingy when they can't quite describe what ever it is they're trying to describe. I see it used more on line than off line.

I use it a whole lot, since I tend to go into inarticulate adjective overdrive when I'm trying to describe something. I've never noticed any difference in it's usage between sighted and blind.

I agree. It's not just a blind expression. Lots of people use it when they can't quite think of the proper word to describe something.

I tend to use it when I'm chatting or in e-mails, but I don't actually use "thingy" when I'm talking...strange. LoL.

The first time I remember hearing it was from Patrick, aka Borris. Since then the TBRN parlance seems to have replaced thingy with doob. I highly doubt that term will catch on in the sighted community.

My girlfriend and her son tend to use the word "thing" a lot, even when describing common household objects. It's like they just can't come up with the common name for something sometimes, and now, after living with them for over a year, I do it too on occasion. Sometimes when they talk about the "thing," I have to ask them which thing they're talking about. LOL!

i've never used it, given the fact that a few of my friends aren't from the US, and would have no clue as to what i'm talking about.
